Amorim responds to Keane criticism

Ruben Amorim says he must put Manchester United’s interests before himself amid criticism from Roy Keane about the club’s Premier League performances.

Keane accused United of “not trying” in the league after they racked up their 16th defeat of the Premier League season at Brentford, leaving them down in 15th.

Amorim has openly prioritised their Europa League campaign, resting key players in the league, and guided the club to the final against Tottenham on May 21.

If United lift the trophy and beat Spurs, they would earn qualification to the Champions League.

Asked about the former United captain’s criticism, Amorim said: “We are trying to do our best but I agree we can do better.

“I have nothing to say about the criticism because we deserve it.

“If we cannot accept everything in this kind of season then we are in the wrong business.

“I have fully acknowledged that and agree with all the critics.

“But in this moment, I think it is really clear we have to be smart and take the risk, and we have to risk getting a lot of critics from everybody, because the standards of Roy Keane and all these guys is really high.

“But I have to make a choice – what is the best for the club, not for me.”
